PREDICTING PROTEIN SECONDARY STRUCTURE
(OUCL in cooperation with Imperial Cancer Research Fund)

Given the primary structure of a protein (sequence of amino acids)
Find its secondary structure (shape)
Predict whether an tex2html_wrap_inline176-helix will occur for individual residues

Examples: 12 non-homologous proteins (1612 residues)

Background knowledge: physical and chemical properties of the individual residues and their relative positions within the proteins

ILP system applied: GOLEM

Twenty-one clauses produced, each around fifteen literals long

Their accuracy on independent test set was 82%, while the accuracy of the best conventional method was 73%
