KDD
and Data Mining
-
Data mining is often used as a synonym
for KDD.
-
In Statistics, the term has been used
historically (often derogatively) to refer to the process of data analysis
without a priori hypotheses to verify.
-
We take the view that data mining refers
to a extracting patterns (models) from data.
-
KDD is the overall process of selecting
and preparing data, selecting projections, selecting data mining methods,
extracting patterns, evaluating patterns as potential “knowledge”, and
consolidating knowledge.
Hence, data mining is a step in the
overall KDD process
